The teacher led the kindergarten line into a big room. Then a round woman in a huge white apron emerged from a doorway. She carried a cloth-covered platter.

A cinnamon smell came from the platter, not from Drakon. Kristin stepped forward, eager to see what it was.

“Welcome to kindergarten,” the round woman and the teacher chorused.

The children were guided to the table. Then each was served a warm-from-the-oven piece of sweet coffeecake.

“I think I’m going to like school,” said Erica, the girl next to Kristin.

Drakon’s head peeked over the edge of the table from his perch on Kristin’s lap.

“What’s that?” Erica asked.
